MAGISTRATE'S COURT

A trio of first-offending inebriates comprising two Spaniards, tho members of a vessel in port, and a woman, appeared at the Magistrate's Court today, before Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, g.M. The men professed . to have very hazy ideas of the' words' addressed to them, though the constable who made the arrests stated that they spoke English fluently last night. Each was fined 20s, in default ordered to undergo 48 hours' imprisonment. Tbev were ordered to be handed over to the master of thoir vessel on the completion of the sentences. The woman was let off more lightly with a penalty of 10s, and an alternative of 24 hours in gaol. ' Jamej Blair Campbell, who pleaded not guilty to a charge of being an idle and disorderly person, with insufficient; ■lawful means of support, was remanded to the ' 11th December, in order that arrangements might be made to place him in the Old Men's Home.

A native woman, Mary Honeycomb, was proceeded against for failing to send a boy, Karewa Moses, of whom she was the guardian, to school. Evidence showed that the boy, who was a little over twelve years of age, had worked as fleece picker > for a sheep farmer, who had been, misinformed as to his age, believing him to be 14 years of age, and consequently not compelled to attend school. . His Worship, m fining defendant 17s, with interpreter's fee ss, said that if the boy was kept away from the public school in future he would be sent to an industrial school.
