VERDUN FRONT
FUTILE GERMAN OFFENSIVE
SANGUINARY DEFEAT BY THE FRENCH
LONDON, 25th September. !A French official communique-states : The liveliest artillery activity prevails on the Aiane. We repulsed a, raid on our outposts north of Braye-en-Laonnois. The Germans on the right bank of the Mouse, after a bombardment, attacked our trenches north of Bois le Chaume, on a front of a mile and a-hulf. Four battalions, supported by storming troops, advanced, but the attack was broken by our fire and did not reach the lines except in a few elements in the centre, where fierce hand-to-hand fighting resulted in the ejection of the Germans. Simultaneously two secondary attacks were launched north of Bezonvaux and south of Beaumont respectively, but were sanguinarily defeated. Our troops, leaving their trenches, rushed out to meet their assailants. Two fresh attacks in the afternoon on the Bois le Chaume only increased the enemy's losses. > ' (Received September 26, 11 a.m.) LONDON, 25th September. A French communique states-: The enemy attacked in the direction of Beaumont. In spite of the extensive übo of flame-throwers, he was repulsed with heavy loss. ■'.'■': .
