MEETING OF COUNCIL

The City Council met last night, when there were present": The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke, C.M.G.), Councillors W. T. Hiklreth, E. A. Wright, J. Castle, W. J. Thompson, C. B. Norwood, J. 0. Sborland, M. F. Luckie, L. M'Kenzie, A. R. Atkinson, W. H. Bennett, J. Godber, G. Frost, W. H. P. Barber. •

An application from a Corporation tenant in Manners-street for a rebate of rent was not entertained.

Water and drainage facilities are to be extended to certain sections at Tira-ngi-road, Kilbirnie, as soon as men can be spared, at an estimated cost of £46. Inspector Greeks, at present engaged as ranger and sanitary inspector for the outlying districts, is to confine himself to ranging duties, and an additional sanitary inspector is to be engaged for the outlying districts. The granting of free use. of the, Town Hall for entertainments in.aid of patriotic funds was approved in the following cases : —Maori Entertainers; Citizens' Christmas Gift Fund, 20th, 21st, and 22nd November; Y.M.C-A.;, week commencing 17th September Notices are to be served on the owners of property in Zohrab-street calling upon them to contribute their proportion of the cost of constructing such street, in accordance with the allocation made by the City Valuer, in terms of the Municipal Corporations Act and the Wellington City Streets Act. An extension of the public sewer to a portion of Rodrigo-road was authorised as recommended, on the undertaking "that a ratepayer contributes • half the cost of the work, such half-cost being limited to £9. •

The following gifts to the Zoological collection were acknowledged and the donors thanked :—One white, cockatoo, from Mrs. Lambert, Plimmerton; one emu, from Mr. Aitken, Paradise piamond Lake, Wakatipu; four bundles of shrubs, from Mr. A. S. Walsh, Colleyatreet, Foxton. The Outlying Districts Committee recommended that the council should inform the Hataitai Land Company that the construction of a new street (Jtakauroad) and the subdivision of the land adjacent thereto would require to be dealt with as a new proposal, and the works connected with it would require to be carried out to the complete satisfaction of the City Engineer within a period to be determined by the council. The recommendation was adopted.

Liability is to be denied in connection with a olaim for damages owing to a collision between a motor-car and a tramway centre.pole. The Terrace School is to be admitted to the School Library schemo at the commencement of 1918.

The only tender received for the Library periodical contract, for the year 1918 , (from Messrs. Whiteombe and Tombs, Ltd.), was accepted. Permission was granted for the extension of a right-of-way off.The Terrace, and the erection of a residence to front such extension, provided that no house (apart from the one referred to) shall acquire a building- frontage to the rights of-way. The superintendent of Fire Brigade (Mr. H. Tait) was authorised to repre--sent the council oil &. committee of experts to enquire into the matter of false fire-alarms received from an automatic fire-alarm in a Government Department.

Consent to alter the position of a branch right-of-way off a,n existing private way at Taianaki-streefc was given, subject to the conditions fixed by the City Engineer. . ' » In view of" the fact that the premises are primarily business premises, permission waa granted for the erection of additions to buildings at the corner of Helen and Apuka streets, Brooklyn, al-though-the additional structure will reduce the air-apace below the by-law requirements. In reply to Councillor Frost, the Mayor stated that the improvemenlbs to G-rafto'n-road were delayed in the first place because all residents did not at once fulfil their part of the agreement. Now the City Engineer has difficulty in arranging for latiour for all works requiring'to be carried out.
