LONG LISTS OF NEW HONOURS

Long lists of the first recipients of the Order of Companions of Honour, arid of the various classes of the Order of the British Empire, have b»en issued. The men and women chosen for distinction are drawn from every walk of life whose services during tho war have won particular notice. One class of fche Order of t&a. Bntwh

Empire consists of a medal awarded for tho services of men and women engaged in manual and other war work, for acts of great courage and self-sacrifice, high example in initiative, perseverance, skill, resource, and invention.

An announcement foreshadows that recommendations by fellow-workers for worthy recipients will be considered.

It is further announced that the Governments of India and the Dominions have agreed that Kgls of the recipients of the Order of the British Empire shall appear on subsequent dates. The civil service and military and naval awards will similarly be deferred.

The Order of Companion of Honour has been conferred on seventeen persona of bpth sexes, headed by General Smuts. The list includes the 'Marchioness of Lansdowne, Miss Violet Markham, Mr. Wardle, M.P., Mr. Wilkie, M.P., and Lord Burnham.

There are five Dames of the Grand Cross of the -British Empire, headed by the Queen.

Thirteen Knights of tho Grand Cross include the Duke of Connaught, Lord Emmott, Lord Gladstone, Lord Sydenham, and Sir Arthur Pearson.

Five Dames Commander include the Dowager Marchioness of Dufferin and Mrs. Alfred Lyttelton.

.Forty-three Knights Commander of the British Empire comprise administrators a-nd advisers of various Government bodies.

Seventy-nine Commanders include Mr. Appleton (secretary of the General Federation of Trades Unions), Mr. Havelock Wilson, (secretary of the Seamen's and Firemen's Union). Matrons include leading members of the London Red Cross Society, and seventy Officers of the Order include a number of trades union officials.
