BRITISH FIGHTING
ADVANTAGES WON AT LENS
A HEAVY WEEK OF AIR-FIGHTING

LONDON, 24th August.
Sir Douglas Haig reports : There was heavy local fighting all day for the Green Crassier, an important enemy stronghold south of Lens. We obtained i foothold this morning, and repulsed several counter-attacks, with heavy enemy. losses. Fierce fighting continues. We repulsed an attack northward of the Ypres-Eoulers railway, and advanced slightly north-eastward of Langemarck. The week's air fighting has been incessant, and more severe than in any previous week. A change in the wind favoured our aeroplanes yesterday. We brought down twelve and drove down six. Two of ours are missing, and one landed on Ostend beach. Our aeroplanes dropped five tons of explosives on objectives behind the enemy's lines. ENEMY'S LOSSES PARTICULARLY HEAVY (Received August 25, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, 24tTi August. Sir Douglas Haig reports : There was fierce fighting south of Lens. We now hold German trenches north-west of the Green Crassier. The enemy's losses were particularly heavy. Tl'.e Portuguese repulsed two raids north-west of La Bassee,. The German artillery is active north-west of Ypres.
