ON THE FRENCH LINE
GERMAN BOMBARDMENT ON
THE AISNE
VIOLENT COUNTER-ATTACKS AT
MORT H.OMME,
(Received August 23, 3.30 p.m.)
LONDON, 22nd August. A French communique states: The enemy last night violently bombarded different points of our first line on the Aisne. The Germans made several strong attacks in the region of Mecejean Farm, east of Brave,, south of Le Bovelle, between Ailes and the Hurtebise monument and the California Plateau. We entirely maintained our positions everywhere and look prisoners.
We repulsed a violent counter-attack yesterday evening between Hill 305 and Mort Homme. A brilliant counteroffensive drove out'the enemy from elements in which he obtained a footing in our new front line.
