Libel actions settled
"IMPUTATIONS. REGRETTED."
Before his Honour Mr. Justice Hosking in the Supreme Court this morning, the case of Harry Downs v. the John Bull Newspaper Proprietary Company was called oh. It was an action claiming. £2000 damages for libel.
Mr. T. M. Wilford: I appear for--the plaintiff, your Honour. Sir John Findlay, X.C: I appear, sir, for the defendant. The defendant wishes to state that the case can be withdrawn from the list, and on this' application for withdrawal he takes the opportunity of saying that after the explanations made to him by the plaintiff he is satisfied that Messrs. Downs Brothers are loyal Britishers, who have not, since the outbreak of war, sold or dealt with German goods of any kind, and that the defendant company therefore regrets that any imputation to the contrary should have appeared in its columns. Mr. Wilford daid that he was satisfied with the statement made on behalf of the defendant, and the case was accordingly withdrawn. Mr. Wilford also mentioned the case of Bird and Jensen v. the John. Bull Newspaper Proprietary Company, a claim for £1000 damages for libel, set down for hearing to-morrow. In this case also Mr. Wilford said that a settlement, entirely satisfactory to him and his clients, had been, reached, and the case could be struck out.
Sir John Findlay, X.0., concurred, arid the case was accordingly removed from the list.
