AMERICAN CATHOLICS
ATTITUDE ON THE WAR.
The position of the Catholic Chiirol in the United States towards America' participation in the 'wax was stated re eently by Cardinal O'ConneU in an ad dress delivered at a meeting in Bostoi in the interests of the ■ 9th" Regiment Massachusetts National Guard. !
"Our position," he said, J'is_ foundef. on duty and'not on emotion^ and t!i« is true of the stand, which every tr« Catholic takes in the face of all' tli grave responsibilities of human life. 1 Th air is' rent with strident voices shout) ti; hysterically a thousand different ■prin ciples. . All this is poor service to-tlv nation. It serves/ only to coi;fuse th minds of the people. "Let us have done onco for all wit! these bewildering orations, with thes endless insincerities, for jf they aim U fire men's courage, they* only increas their confusion. The one thing now tha is necessary and the only thing that wil stand firmly through all tKe variou vicissitudes now before us will be' thi principle—our country 13 at war and w are bound before God to render it'ou fullest service. Hate no one, despise m one. The nation that enters war fo hatred's sake has already lost even be fore it fights its first battle."
