MEETING OF THE COUNCIL.

A meeting of the National War Fundl Council was held on Friday last, and ; ' considerable amount of formal business was transacted. There were 'present- ' Messrs. J. H. Gun6on (Mayor of Auck land), J. H. Upton, J. P. Luke, W. E ", Bethune, Hugh Morrison, H. HollaiK. (Mayor of Christehurch), W. Recce, J. J Clark (Mayor of Dunedin), J. D. M Gruer. Messrs. Grimmond and Evans representing the Weetland Advisory Com . mittee, attended by invitation.' Messrs Grimmond and Evans expressed their en tire satisfaction with the methods of ad : ministration of the Westland Funds unde the control of the council, and Mr Leaver also expressed the satisfaction o his committee in regard to system of loca '; administration and the smooth working o : existing arrangements, and said he won dered that a large number of other dis tricts had not taken advantage of th scheme. It may be explained that loca relief is administered by the Advisor; Committees, which aro appointed from tin original executive of the Patriotic Funds ; The council also dealt with an appli cation from the heads of the Public Ser , vice Departments to accept the contro and administration of the fund contribut ed by members of the Service, at presen uninvested. This fund, which nov amounts to £2145 was raised specially fo the benefit of Civil servants who jna; need assistance as a result of the ♦an The council resolved to accept the fund| which will be administered independent^ of any assistance granted to such offioen by way of pension or relief from, othef patriotic societies. An advisory -com-. mittee consisting of Messrs. J. Hislop, Pope, Robieson, and Dr. Anderson, hai been appointed, and will draw from tirmto time funds required from the council.' sub-committees of the Civil Service Asso ciation being established in the differsn centres.
