MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Various cases were dealt with at today's sitting 6f the Magistrate's Court, over which Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M., presided. For drunkenness, Henry Jackson was fined 10s, while in respect of a charge of using obscene language he was penalised in the sum of 40s, with the usual alternative.

Drink was stated to be the trouble of Alexander ColviHe, who was charged with being an idle and disorderly person with insufficient lawful means, of support. " I will give you a, chance to get work," said his Worship, who recorded a conviction, and ordered the defendant to come up for sentence when called upon. An old offender, by the name of Thomas O'Brien, denied stealing a lady's costume coat, valued at £4, from a local photographic studio. The evidence against him was, however, convincing, and he had to admit several previous convictions, including two for theft. He was sent to gaol for one month. Donald Kerr, for whom Mr. T. Neave appeared, was fined 10s for keeping poultry too close to a dwelling. Henry Donkin, who failed to register a dog, was also'fined lfc. A fine of 20s, with costs, was imposed in the case of Walter Anderson, who failed' to make application to continuo the registration of a number of a recentlypurchased motor-car. s As the result of a family quarrel, George Cowan was charged with assaulting William Davis. Defendant was fined 20s, with costs.
