LONDON, 16th August. A French communique states: After violent artillery preparation, we attacked at dawn, in conjunctions' with the British on our right.

The infantry, with superb elan, assaulted the enemy positions on both sides of the Steenstraate-Dixmude road, carrying all their objectives.

They crossed the Stenebeke .River, making progress on the right bank in contact with the vigorous attack of the British.

South of Ailles we carried a solid enemy trench system on a front of 1000 yards. Four enemy counter-attacks were easily repulsed.
