UNION COMPANY FINED £30
CHARGE UNDER MILITARY SER-
VICE ACT.
This morning in the Magistrate's Court the Union Steam Ship Company was proceeded against for employing on one of its steamers a reservist who had not enrolled in the terms of the Military Service Act. The defendant company, which had previously been convicted of a similar offence, was fined £30, with costs. Mr. P. Levi, who appeared for the company, stated that the breach was inadvertently committed. A similar charge was preferred against Bobert Sanders, contractor, for whom Mr. M. Myers appeared. Evidence called showed that the defendant had not employed the man in question continuously for seven days, and Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M., found that the case did not come within the meaning of the Act. Thd case was dismissed.
