INFLAMMABILITY OF COALS

For some little time past experiments have been going on in the Dominion Laboratory with a view to ascertaining the relative inflammability of New Zealand coals. The matter arose out of the recent Huntly disaster. At the meeting on Wednesday night of the geological section of the Wellington Philosophical Society, Mr. W. Donovan, of the Laboratory, gave an account of the experiments which had been earned out. He showed that some of the so-called brown coals were actually more inflam-' mable than the bituminous coals. A discussion followed, in which Professor Easterfield, Dr. J. Alan Thompson, and Messrs. Morgan and Jenkinson took paTt and the opinion was expressed that had the results of the experiments been known earlier, the Huntly disaster would never have occurred.
