WAR PENSIONS
LIABILITY STEADILY INCREASING

"; New Zealand's liability under the heading.of war pensions is steadily increasing. During the month of July the Pensions Board dealt with 753 new claims. (505 from soldiers and 248 from dependents), and 363 renewals of pensions already in force. Of the 505 soldiers' claims) permanent pensions were granted in 14 cases, temporary pensions in 384 caees, 42 applications were declined^. ;14. adjourned, and 51 were made by men discharged from camp in New Zealand. Of the dependents, 151 were granted permanent pensions, 66 temporary;' pensions; 18 applications were declined, 8 adjourned, and 6 were from dependents of soldiers discharged! from camp. The annual value of pensions granted during the month was £42,035. Up to date 6558 applications from eoldiers and 3445 from dependents have been dealt with. The soldiers' cases have been disposed of as follows :—1056 granted permanent pensions, 4838 temporary pensions, 527 declined, 53 on hand, while 84 were from men discharged from camp in New Zealand. Of the dependents, 2498 were granted permanent pensions, 468 temporary pensions, 313 applications were declined, 157 are on hand, and there were 9 camp cases.
The annual value of the 614 pensions granted during July was £42,035. The total number of pensions granted by the board during the current financial year (for four months ended 31st July) was 2334, of a total annual value of £156,----348. After deducting the value of 500 temporary pensions which' have expired (£33,030) and adding the annual value as at 31st March (£257,000), New ZeaOand's present liability for war pensions ■amounts to £380,000.
'-■ As to the camp cases : Eighty-four came;from soldiers and 9 from dependents. Fifty-six soldiers were granted ■temporary pensions, 25 applications were "declined, and 2 adjourned. Of the dependents, 6 were granted pensions and the remaining applications declined. The annual value of the camp pensions is £3529.
