DEATH OF MR. R. S. SMYTHE
The death is announced, at Highfield, Deepdene, of Mr. R. S. Smythe, famili-; arly known in New Zealand and Australia as "The Much Travelled." This title he earned by his business wanderings all over the globe. The late Mr. Smythe was for many years the best known impresario in the colonies. He will be remembered especially in connection with the tours,, amongst other celebrities, of Richard Proctor (the astronomer), G. A. Sala, Archibald Forbes (war correspondent), Stanley (the explorer), the prince of reciters, the Rev. Charles Clark, Max O'Rell, and the great humourist, Mark Twain. Mr. Smythe arrived in Melbourne in 1855, and spent eight years on the Australian press. During his long career he met most of the men and women of celebrity on the stage and platform. He had a wonderful memory, and' this, added to his courtesy, cheerfulness, and other engaging qualities, made him one of the most remarkable of personalities. He died at the age of 84.
