GERMAN ESCAPEE

A DETERMINED LIEUTENANT

THIRD ATTEMPT FOR LIBERTY:

(Received May 30, 8.20 a.m.)

LONDON, 29th May. Lieutenant The'ien, a German prisoner, escaped from Chelmsford Gaol. He had previously made sensational escapes from Donington Hall in 1915, and at Maidenhead Camp in 1916. On Saturday night Thelen was apparently locked safely in a cell. A warder saw him and his companion asleep throughout the night. Really two dummies occupied the beds. Dummy padlocks made of cardboard replaced the locks of the cell after they had been picked. Thelen also picked the locks in the corridor and the gate of the gaol yard. He and his companion climbed a wall, but a cyclist pursued them and found them hiding chin-deep in water.
