NEW PAPAL DELEGATE

Comparatively little is known in Sydney of the newly-appointed Apostolic Delegate to Australia. This (says the Sydney Sun) can probably be attributed to the fact that most of Monsignor. Cattaaeo's recent activity and work as a prfiiie had been confined within the walls of the Proptganda College; in the Via di Spagna, Konie, of which institution he has been vector for the past six years. The Propaganda College is attached to the Congregation of Propaganda Fide L the secretary being a Cardinal. Outside the Vatican it is perhaps the most important ecclesiastical house in Rome, and its object, as its name implies, is to direct and forward the propagation, of the Catholic religion, especially among the heathen. The college-is for the education of missionaries to every country in the world. The average number of students'continually in training for the priesthood is about 200, comprised of representatives of all countries, tongues, and complexions, who are not only maintained and educated gratuitously, but are equipped and! gent forward to their several destinations at the charge of the institution. The college library is one of the finest in the world. Monsignor Cattaneo, as president of this college, is naturally constantly in communication with the hierarchy of every country which has representatives under his care. " His knowledge of the work! is therefore very wide. Up to the present he has notdischarged the duties of a Papal delegate in any country, but he nevertheless has travelled extensively, and spent some time in America as a visitor. Ha is a keen student of international history and affairs.

Monsignor Cattaneo, unlike most college rectors, is far from being an austere or severe man. He is most approachable, and he takes a remarkable personal interest in his students. He was born near Milan, in the north of Italy, 54 years ago. He studied for the priesthood in Rome, and for some years after his ordination did ordinary, parochial work. His ability won for him at an early age the position of vicar-general of his own diocese, and up till the time of his appointment to the rectorship of the Propaganda ho held other important posts.
