DESTROYER FIGHT
ENEMY BOLTS FOR ZEEBRUGGE
ELEVEN CHASED BY FOUR
GERMAN VESSELS SEEN TO BE HIT.
The New Zealand High Commissioner reports':—
LONDON, 10th May, 5.15 p.m.
The Admiraltty reports : A scouting force of light cruisers and destroyers from Harwich, when cruising between the English and Dutch coasts this morning, sighted eleven .German destroyers to the south on a parallel line. They immediately closed, and opened fire.
The enemy made off to the southwards at full speed, under cover; of a dense smoke-screen. Our vessels chased them for eighty minutes, and engaged them at long range, but were unable to overtake them. Four of our destroyers chased the eleven Germans to within range of the guns at Zeebrugge. Our only casualty was one man slightly wounded. The enemy's destroyers were seen to bo hit.
