DENTAL ASSOCIATION
THE- .ANNUAL MEETING.
The annual meeting of the New Zealand Dental Association was continued yesterday afternoon, the president (Captain M. E. Denniston, N.Z.D.C.) being in the chair.
The Hon. G. W. Russell. Minister of Public Health, addressed the gathering. He said there was a shortage of dental students in the Dentists' College at Dunedin, which was the only centre of dental education in New Zealand, Students were so few that they were insufficient to meet the requirements of the population, and in this respect the Government was prepared to consider any scheme whereby students could be educated in the four principal centres. He did not mind how high the test for professional dental knowledge was. The expense of sending a prospective student to Dunedin was at present very great, but it could be lessened by the establishment of colleges in the four centres.
Mr. Russell also dealt with the questions of public dental services and the treatment of school children.
At the conclusion of his address the Minister was heartily applauded. Later in the afternoon a paper entitled "Local Anaesthesia in Camp Practice" was read ■by Lieutenant M. K. Litchfield.
A smoke concert was held at the Bui--, lington in the evening, when members were entertained by the members of the Wellington branch. Mr. George Tripe presided over a large attendance, and the evening passed, off most; enjoyably. The conference resumed this morning. In the evening an official dinner will be held at the Grand Hotel,- at which the Acting-Prime Minister and other members of the Cabinet, also the directors of medical services and dental services, arc expected to be present.
