ACCLIMATISATION MATTERS
At the last monthly meeting of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society, the secretary read the regulations gazetted for the game shooting season of 1917 in the Wellington Society's district. Any holder of a ,£1 license may shoot cock pheasants, hares, Californian and Australian quail from. Ist May to 31st July. Grey ducks, teal ducks, and black swarlS may be shot without license between the same dates. Twenty-five birds per gun per day is the limit. Special emphasis is laid upon. the statement that Paradise ducks 'and native pigeons are absolutely protected throughout the Dominion and may not be shot anywhere. The ranger reported that W. Roland, of Palraerfston North, had been prosecuted upon two charges of taking fish unlawfully. He was convicted and fined £3 on one charge and £2 Ss on the other. W. Dbdd, a soldier from. Awapuni Camp, was fined £1 for having a hare in his possession out of seasop. The council adopted the ranger's* recommendation and decided to refund the amount of the fine, as Dodd was obeying an order from his officer.. The secretary was instructed to send a circular to all sub-committees calling attention, to clauses in the new rules affecting branches. | ' The treasurer reported that though the bank debit on 31st March, 1917, was £65, the cash assets and liabilities were practically equal. Mr. Miller, tho society's manager at Masterton Hatchery, reported that while on holiday recently lie had visited all the hatcheries of any importance in the South Island, and was satisfied. that his hatchery and water supply was second to none.
