MAGISTRATE'S COURT
To-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court was presided over by. Mr, L. Q.Reid, S.M. Annabella Swanson admitted several previous convictions for drunkenness, and, was fined 20s, with the alternative of serving seven days in gaol. Six first offending inebriates received the usual lenient treatment. :
William Wallace, described as a.;very cantankerous old man, was charged with being a rogne and vagabond, in that he was found by night on private property in Wakefield-etreet. It was stated that' Wallace refused to go ,to a home, and apparently preferred to live the life of a' vagrant. The Magistrate decided to send, the old man to gaol for seven days.t A plea of, guilty . was ; proffered by Aleck Mackrs, who was alleged to hava assaulted James Searle. Mackrs stated that he had had a certain amount of provocation, i He was fined 20s, with the alternative of serving three days' im-; prieonment.; • On a charge of committing a breach of his prohibition order, Patrick Ryan, was fined 20s, with the alternative of. serving seven days in gaol. In respect of a similar charge, Thomas O'Brien was penalised in the sum of 10s, with the. option of three days' imprisonment. ; P. Murphy, who drove his motor-cycle in Adelaide-road in a manner dangerous to the public, was fined 40s, with costs, 1 while for riding a motor-cycle in Ade-, laide-road at a greater speed than twenty miles an hour, William H. Edwards was penalised in.the sum of 20s, with costs. ; " This is a very bad case," stated the City Solicitor (Mr. J. O'Shea), in re-i ference to John M'Caskill, who was| charged with, furiously .driving i vehicle in Lambton-quay on 16th. March. The vehicle in question was a pony-trap;' which defendant drove along Willis-; street and Lambton-quay late at night at an excessive speed. He was fined 20s, with costs. '■ For having insufficient lights on a, vehicle, Bertram Pouli' was ordered to pay costs. Charles Daniei Hargreayes,; who allowed stock to wander, was sinii larly dealt with
Charged with having insufficient light on a vehicle, Alfred H. Lake was fined, 20s, with costs. For leaving a vehicle unattended, George Longhurst was also; fined 20s, with costs. ' Mary Ann Curry, who keeps a small; shop in. Tory-street, was charged with doing business on a Sunday. She was| fined 20s, with, costs, while on an alter-! native charge she was convicted and dis-' charged. . •
