(SI TELEORAPH.—MESS ASSOCIATION.)

CHRISTCHURCH, 24th Feb. Before the No. 2 Canterbury Military Service Board to-day, Archibald Henry Anthony, solicitor, of Christcliurch, asked for three months' extension of time from the date of his being passed as medically fit, in order to enable him to close up his business a.nd make financial and other arrangements in connection wilth his private property. It was stated that the appellant was passed as,fit for active service.

Asked why he had not made his arrangements beforehand, the appellalnt said Ithat hs had not had the slightest idea that he wo\ild be passed. The Chairman (Mr. H. W Bishop, S.M.): You are in partnership with Mr. T. G. Russell?

Appellant: Yes, but of course he ie not in active business.

The Chairman : You have got a partner. Other solicitors have closed down, 1 giving up everything. Appellant: My partner is interested in other matters, and we are closing down business altogether, so far as Russell and Anthony are concerned. The Chairman: It is somewhat difficult to know what is the right thing to do.

Captain Spratt: Are you the trustee of any estates?

Appellant: Four. I propose to close my accounts and retire from the trust.

The Chairman: What time do you want ?

Appellant: Three months from 14th February, the date I was passed. The Chairman: You did not anticipate being passed?

Appellant: I did not. Ca.ptain Spratt mentioned the case of a solicitor in Taranaki who, when war broke ' out, fixed up his trusts in five days in order to join the Main Expeditionary Force.

The Chairman: Yes, but Anthony is not a Colonel Malone. We wish to view th-e matter quite sympathetically, but under the circumstances you can. only have until 30th April.
