ANNUAL MEETING CONTINUED;

After- a visit to Trentham Camp yesVi terday afternoon the members attending i the annual meeting of the New Zealand 1] Society of Civil Engineers resumed their! deliberations in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall -in the evening. The president, Mr. R.-W "Holmes, Engineer-' in-Chief to the Public Works Department, was in the chair.

An interesting • and instructive paper, ■ entitled "Notes on the Petone Sewerage Works," was read by Mr. Robert Fox, engineer in charge of the sewerage works. . The scheme, he said, involved the use of a new pump—the Sterophagus pump—and was designed to secure the maximum amount of efficiency with the least amount of supervision. . Some discussion followed on the reading of the paper, and Mr: Fox answered a number of questions. He was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his paper. „ : Mr. Evan Parry's contribution was a - paper '• entitled "The Flow of Water in Conduits," which he said should more i properly be termed a critical discussion i on the flow, of water through pipes and j channels, with special reference to channels. He went into his theme in elaborate fashion, and received the cordial thanks of the members for his paper. TO-DAY'S PROCEEDING. This morning the meeting was resumed when the president rea<l papers prepared by Mr. John Hannah and Mr. John Wood, dealing with the work done by Public Works Department with tho steam shovel, special reference beiug made to the operations 'on the East Coast railway and. the Whangarei-North Auckland Main Trunk line. Mr. S. Jickell (Palmerston North) expressed the opinion that the steam navvy was only a profitable proposition when '•' fte work to be done was one of larga j proportions. ' "The action of the Teredo on the Railway Wharf, Tauranga," a paper by Mr. John Hannah, was read by Mi. P W. Furkert. It illustrate!! * the deadly ravages of the pest, and an educative discussion followed oil preventive methods. . This afternoon members are engaged in inspecting harbour works.
