A MOST IMPORTANT STATEMENT.
LONDON, Ist February, The Daily Chronicle, commenting on Mr. Long's declaration, says .'"This ia a most important statement, embodying the decision of the Ministry Like the Tsar's declaration about Constantinople and Poland, it clears up. a point about which there was a risk of ambiguity The Empire is vitally interested in the Pacific colonies and South-AVest and East Africa, because any'decision to return them would cause a grave breach between the Mother Country and three of the five Dominions. AYe are morally pledged to the Dominions in the matter Wo cannot imagine France or Belgium willingly con-! senting jo have Germany for a neighbour ;in die Cameroons The Germans used :Togoland as a great wireless station to assist .the Atlantic commerce raiders. Japan's retention of Kaiochau may be: taken for granted. The Government should supplement Mr. Long's staterhent with a similar one regarding the Mesopotamian end of the Persian Gulf, which bears the same relation to India as does South-AVest Africa to the Cape."
