A NEW GUINEA PROPOSAL.

MELBOURNE, 30th January. Mr. S. A. Whiteman, of Rabaul (New Guinea), has written to Mr. W. M. Hughes (Federal Premier), suggesting that returned soldiers—especially disabled men—might profitably be placed as small, planters in the coastal territories of New Guinea and' the neighbouring islands. It .would. be necessary to subsidise them for six years until the coconuts commenced to bear. Then they could be left to enjoy life.
