FIRE AT TERRACE GAOL
A fire which might easily have assumed a very serious aspect was discovered in the tailors' shop at the Terrace Gaol at 7.45 last night. The excellent discipline of the gaol staff was at once evident, and in a very few moments two leads of hose were playing on the fire. Mr. T. Vincent, the acting-gaoler, also rang up the city brigade, which was quickly on the. scene in charge of Assistant-Supt. Robertson,, and the outbreak, which was then well under control, was quickly extinguished. The shop, which is just above the room in which supplies of soft goods arc .stored for the other Dominion gaols,' is of wood and iron, and about 66ft long and 18ft wide. Gas ovens are used for heating the irons. The prisoners at work in the shop left at 4.30 p.m., and the warders in charge at 5 p.m., when all appeared safe. It was considerably damaged, and the contents of the store below were damaged by water. There was no insurance.
The prisoners were fully aware of the outbreak, but there was no excitement.
