Lajice-Corporal Frank E. Ballard, one of the employees o£ the Wellington Gas Company, Limited, who was recently killed in action, was in charge of a bay in. a. trench that was being "strafed" by the Huns, who were making a raid on it. Ballard ordered the man who was observing down from the parapet, and took the post himself, and was almost instantly killed by machine-gun fire. One of Ballard's comrades, writing, states that not one of the Hun raiding party got back to their own tranches.
