NOTES ON THE RACING

(By " Sir Lancelot.")

The Spring Meeting of tho Otaki Maori Baring Club was concluded yesterday in glorious weather. Tho attendance was satisfactory for an off "day. Some good racing was witnessed.

Two ■Tveutham-trainod horses were again successful, making a. total of seven wills to Wellington-owned horses.

.Birkenetta and Onward Moutoa wer. withdrawn from •"••the Trial Handicap, nine starting. Ayah, the Maiden winner on the first day, was sent out a bet favourite. She started on the extreme outside, was in front at half-way, and won pulling up. Black Night, was a length clear of Battle Tide, with Stream of Gold (the full brother to Gold Stream) close up fourth. "The winner carries weight well, and should not be long getting out of the hack class. Black Night (Elevation—Black Squall), who finished second, is a- member of A. Goodman's Trentham team, and' paid a better price- than the winner.

Lady Multifid, who ran badly on the previous day, Hon^ora, and Queen's Post were scratched for the Otaki Hack Handicap. Miss Deval was sent out a hot favourite. She began fairly well, but went back- last through galloping ou the heels of something in front of her. She ran round the field at the bend! and was second at'the top of the straight. Hidden out. she just failed to reach Glorify, who won by two lengths. Kukri was three lengths further back. Then carno Sir Wallace. Manu and Miss Sa-tion were prominent during the early stages of the race, but went right back before the .business end, the first-named finishing last. The winner won at Pahiatua, and also ran close up to the placed division at Marton and Wanganui. She is held under lease by T. Lloyd, the Marton trainer, and has improved of late. An enquiry was held into the bumping of Miss Deval. Jockeys Mausoii, Goldfinch., and M'Donald were cautioned.

All tins acceptors started for the Te Ringi Hack and Hurdle. Steeplechase. Silver Monarch and Merry Jack led over a -couple of fences, but passing the stand Marton was in. front, with Tauira and Kew at the head of the others. Crystal Star ran off at the .-stand. Tho Hound fell at the next fence, and Kew turned over at tho end of a round. This left .Marton in charge, with Tauira, i-.uat_u.gata, and Merry' Jack next. Oron Park ran off at tlie back. Marton led over the last fence, but in tha run homo Merry Jack had most left in, and won by "two lengths, with Euatangata close" up third. Kirkby, Happy Jack. Tauira, Tviwitea, and Silver Monarch'nko liui-died.' Merry Jack (Merriw.e —Rosowal,.!*) is owned and traiii..d by Mr. W. '_!. C-aisiord. H« has raced consistently at the Hunt Club meetings,

and won at Pahialua. He was deserted on the machine yesterday, and his supporters got a good price.

.All started for the President's Handicap except George. Hyiatus began smartly, and going out of the straight was showing clear of Chakwana and Taringamutu At the back Want ran up to Hyiatus, and this pair came round tho home bend in front, just clear of Tarinjainutii Hyiatus was first into the straight, but halfway down the running was challenged by Chakwana on the outside and Taringamutu on the rails. The latter got up in the last few stride:, mid won by a head, Chakwana half a length away. Gold' Soult, Red Ribbon; and Orleans were close up in that order Tt was a great performance on the part of the winner, considering that she had run two races the previous day. Chakwana ran the mile out well considering the solid pace set. Hylafci.l3 might have won had his rider kept to the rails and not pulled out. He is proving a good bargain for his present owner, having run t*o firsts aud threa seconds out of five starts. Bothvwinner and runnfT-up returned good prices. On her Otaki form, it would take something good to defeat Taringamutu at level weights over ten furlongs.

Miss Deval and Bavswater were the withdrawals from the Electric Hack Handicap. Flying Spur, Pe_rl Maris, and Bsirnsdale were evenly backed. Merry Andrew began smartly, and won from end to end. Spectu'al was running second to the bend, but gave way to Merry Polo (Maniapoto—Merry Chimes) in the straisrht. The latter was making his'first appearance at the meeting. Bairns-dale finished next to the placed divi=ion.

Genre*., waa withdrawn from the Railway Handicap in favour of his stablemate Coldstream, who was successful on the previous day. He again ran a good race, but foiled to concede liberal allowances to Botanist and Menelaus, who were unplaced on Monday. ;For the concluding event, Rahui Welter Hack Handicap, backers went solidly for fiomiora and Haunia.kaka, who were prominent on Monday The winner turned up in Detroit (Frirco —Eishei-maid), who scored his first win in the-colours of Mr. Lindsay M'Donald, with Hnstie second. Both winner and runner-up are trained at Feilding. The New Zealand Cup candidate Ladify finished among the unplaced division.
