During the period 16th to 23rd September the sales amounted to over £26,000, Wellington, as usual, occupying the leading place in a most decided manner. From the table below it will be seen that the total sales in the Wellington district have now reached over £220,000; Christchurch, £132,000; and Auckland and Dunedin, £113,000 each. When some of the schemes whicii are now- under way for collection by local bodies, societies, and private firms mature, no doubt the other three centres will approach more nearly the totals for the capital city. PROSPEROUS MAORIS
In a tour in tho Poverty Bay -district the secretary of the Agricultural and Pastoral Workers' Union (Mr. C. Grayndler) was much impressed with the prosperity of the Native settlers. In one settlement at Manutuke there were about 300 of them on small holdings, with very comfortable houses. They lived well, and their farms, though they were small, had a prosperous look. Many of them, of course, supplemented their returns from the agricultural and pastoral holdings by shearing and such work in the season.
