MAGISTRATE'S COURT

To-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court was presided over by Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M., who dealt with a number of first-offending inebriates. A young man name*d Michael Francis Carrick, for whom Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared, admitted assaulting Alexander Johnson. After hearing the facts ths Magistrate came to the conclusion that the assault was a trivial one, and fined the defendant 10s, with 8s costs. A further remand for one week was granted in the-case of Thomas M'Namara, .charged with attempting to commit a serious offence on a male. Bail was allowed. -

William Webster, who had. previously pleaded not guilty to stealing two pounds of tea, valued at 3s, the property of some person or persons unknown, was remanded till Monday next. Bail was allowed as before.

Henry Denham, who was recently admitted to probation in. the Supreme Court, appeared to answer a charge of breaking the terms of his license. Inspector Hendrey' stated that the accused had broken his license in many different .ways, and apparently did not know what was expected of him. The Magistrate decided to hand over Denham to the Probation Officer.

;An old offender ' named 7Annabella Swanson denied being an incorrigible rogue with insufficient lawful means of :support. The evidence showed that the defendant had been-leading a particularly disreputable life, and she was sentenced to six months' imprisonment.
