WELLINGTON SOUTH CLUB.

The final • round of this club's annual handicap tourney was contested on Thursday Although a few outstanding games have to be accounted for, Mr. Purchas, the club champion, is assured of the first prize, the positions of the leaders being as follow : —

Mr. Purchas thus holds the club trophy (silver knight) for the ensuing year, in addition to tho championship medal, which he won earlier in the season. His previous record in the annual handicap tourneys is six second prizes and one third prize. He has received a number of congratulations on now "going one better "

Mr. Armstrong, the club's president, recently entertained a large number of the members a,t his large residence in Berhampore Various games were played, chess being, of course, foremost. Sides were chosen by_ the president and one of the vice-presidents, the latter's team winning by the narrow margin of one game. Before the members dispersed, Mr. F. K. Kelling tendered their thanks to Mr. Armstrong for his kind hospitality; Mr. Perrott, tlie hon. secretary, is busy with the preliminary ar rangwrnents for the club's impending match by* telegraph or telephone with the Masterton Chess Club. It is hoped to commence play next Saturday evening.
