BIG RAID ON ENGLAND

FIFTEEN .ZEPPELINS TAKE PART

ONE CAPTURED AND ONE DESTROYED

The High Commissioner reports : — LONDON, 24th September, 12.55 p.m. Fifteen Zeppelins made a raid last night on South-Eastern, Eastern, and East Midland Counties, principally Lincolnshire. Three of the Zeppelins raided London, two in the south-east and the other in the east, and eventually on London districts. The damage caused was : 28 killed and 99 injured. Two raiders were brought down in Essex. One was in flames, and the crew and every part of the airship were destroyed. The other, with its crew of 22, was captured intact. . Official.—Airships attacked Lincolnshire, the Eastern counties, and the outskirts of London at midnight, but were beaten off by the anti-aircraft defences. AIRSHIPS OF NEW PATTERN (Received September 25, 11.30 a.m.) ' LONDON, 24th September. Official.—"Theri. were fourteen or fifteen airships in the raid, three of which attacked London. They were large and of a new pattern. The airships principally visited the South-Eastern, Eastern, East-Midland Counties and Lincolnshire. "Two airships attacked London from the south-east, between one and two o'clock in the morning, and another from the east between midnight and one o'clock.

"Aeroplanes were sent up, and anti-aicraft guns opened fire and drove off the raiders. "Bombs were dropped in the southern and south-eastern districts. "It is regretted that twenty-eight people were killed and ninety-nine injured.*

"One raider fell in flames, and was destroyed with its crew. . The second also fell in Essex. The crew of twenty-two officers and men were captured. "Detailed reports of the. casualties and damage have not yet been received."
