MAGISTRATE'S COURT

A short sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held this morning before Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M., when a number cf first-offending inebriates were dealt with in a lenient ma-mier. Agnes Milligan possessed a record of two previous convictions for ' drunkenness, and was penalised to the extent of ss, or fortyeight hours' detection. Lilian Jukes onco again promised to abjure strong drink in the future, and appeared quite satisfied with her treatment at the hands of the Magistrate, namely, a fine of 10s, with the option of spending three days in gaol. A' young woman who, according to Inspector Hendrey, was making a strong endeavour to rid herself' of the drink habit, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence, when called upon, the condition being that she enters the Mount Magdala Home, Christchurch. Gordon Graham, dressed in khaki, appeared to answer a charge of having, on 24tli April, at Wanganui, obtained the sum of £15 from George Swarm. by means of a valueless cheque. He was remanded to appear at Wanganui on 21st instant.

At the Lower Hutt this morning a first offender for drunkenness appeared before Mr. W. C. James, J.P., and was fined ss.
