UNIVERSITY SENATE
MEETING IN WELLINGTON
SOME IMPORTANT BUSINESS,
The business done at a recent meeting in Wellington of the New Zealand University Senate was made public today. There were present: —The Chancellor, Sir Robert Stout (in the chair), the Vice-Chancellor, Mr. J. C. Adams, Dr. W. J. Anderson, Rev. A. Cameron, Professor Chilton, Hon. Dr. Collins, Rev. W. A. Evans, Mr. H. F. von Haast, Professor Hight, Professor Hunter, Professor Kirk, Professor Marshall, and Professor Segar.
The following assistant examiners for the Matriculation Examination were appointed :—ln Latin, Miss Lodder, B.A. (Auckland); in French, Mr. L. J. Du Flou (Auckland). It was decided that the appointment of these examiners should be made as a matter of emer-
gency. ■ . It was resolved that ten Junior University Scholarships be offered for com petition in. 1915.
A letter from Banks's Commercial College, Wellington, regarding history as a subject for the entrance scholarships examination was referred to the Board of Studies.
The Sir Julius von Haast prize was not awarded, as no candidate had qualified for honours in geology. The Cook prize was not awarded as there was no candidate for honours in mathematics.
It was resolved that the result of the examination of a candidate for military science be recorded as a failure.
The confidential reports of the examiners in England were allowed to be sent to college councils.
Tho matter of the Standard Insurance Company's claim for premium on account of a fidelity bond was left in the hands of the Chancellor.
The announcement of the subject for the Habens prize, 1917, as slightly modified, was authorised.
An application from a candidate,, who had gained honours in economics, for exemption from currency and banking, economics, and statistical method as for B.Com. was granted.
An application was received for exemption in subjects for the diploma of journalism in which the candidate had passed in qualifying for degrees.
Ail invitation from the .Massachusetts Institute of Technology to send a delegate at the function in honour of the opening of the new building on 14th June, 1916, was left in the hands of the Chancellor, the Rev. E. Guthrie, M.A., 13.D.,- being suggested as delegate. In reference to the point raised in the agent's report with regard to the marking of answers in the case of candidates who answer more than the required number of questions, it was agreed that suggestions be sent in as to the instructions to be given to can-, didates.
The, annual report of the Medical School, the Dental School, the School of Mines, and the School of Home Science were received from the University of Otago.
NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FUND. Professor Hunter moved,' and Mr. von Haast seconded, the following motiou :— - . That of the amount available out of the National Endowment Fund for distribution to the colleges by the University one-fourth be granted to each college as follows : — 1. To Auckland' University College the sum of £300 for carrying on the work pf the Workers' Educational Association i-nd for university extension classes; and the balance for the college library, the science laboratories, and the School of Architecture. 2. To Victoria University College the sum of £300 for carrying on the work of the Workers'- Educational Association and for university extension classes, and the balance for founding a school .of economics. 3. To Canterbury College the sum of £300 for carrying on the work of the Workers' Educational Association and for university extension classes, and the 'balance for the college library. 4. To tho "University of Otago the sum of £300 for carrying on the work of the Workers' Educational Association, for university extension classes, and ihe balance for the Chair.of Economics and History, and for the library. This was agreed to.
