MAGISTRATE'S COURT

> A short sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held this morning before Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., when four firstoffending inebriates were dealt with as usual.

George Haslam admitted being drunk while in charge of a horse and cart on Wellington-terrace. After impressing upon Haslam tho extreme danger of being drunk under such circumstances, the Magistrate imposed a fine of £1, in default three days' imprisonment.

"This man prefers-to go about sneakthieving instead of earning an honest living," stated Chief-Detective Boddam when referring to Robert Carlton Gray, who was charged with stealing money and articles to the total value of £4 6s. The thefts took place at the Hotel Bristol, and the money and articles were the property of three domestics. Tho accused, who had several previous convictions against him,' was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment on each charge. A'young woman, namd Violet Williams, was charged with being a rogue and vagabond. She denied the charge, but the police evidence was strongly against her, and she was sent to gaol for six months.

Frank Bryce M'Carthy, a young man, was charged with failing to provide for the maintenance of an unborn illegitimate child. M'Carthy admitted paternity and was ordered to deposit £50 as security in the event of an 'order being eventually made against him.
