COLLISION WITH POLICE.
(HI TELEGIUPrt.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
; AUCKLAND, 24th April. A collision between the police and about 40 Maori soldiers occurred at the police station to-night. The trouble arose over the arrest of two Maori soldiers, who, in the afternoon, were taken in charge for using obscene language. A number of Maoris, who were on leave from Narrow Neck Camp, made 'their way to the police station, whers only two officers were on duty. Sub-Inspector ,M'llveney saw them from his house and reached the station first, where ho advised the- Maoris to do nothing foolish. Meanwhile other constables were summoned. At the conclusion of the sub-inspector's remarks, one of the ringleaders cried : "Is it going to be nothing or the gaol? I say the gaol." The ■ answer was a. general forward movement by the soldiers. Promptly the. police closed, some using their fists and others their batons. - The Maoris fell like ninepins, and soon retreated, and one was arrested on a charge, of assaulting the sub-in-spector. Three others were also apprehended.
