ARMENIA'S FUTURE

A PLEA FOR INDEPENDENCE,

fFEOU OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) LONDON, 10th March. An ■ Armenian journalist, Mr. Tacoor Kamiguan, who is in London, believes that Turkey still has a sublime faith in the power of Germany to win the war. The Germans have bled Turkey of food supplies at the expense of the Christians. While there has always been a deep human sympathy on- the part of England with the sufferings of his people, and splendid practical help, it was felt in his country that there was need for a political movement whereby Armenia, after the war, could obtain its independence as a nation. . "As to the Armenians' part in the war, they are actually among the most devoted of your allies, and whilst we hear so much about the restoration. of Servia and Belgium after the war, little or nothing is said in this way about Armenia that would conform to. the treaties, including the Treaty of Berlin (61st Article) guaranteeing self-govern-ment to Armenia." Mr. Karniguan cited the gallantry of General Haritsnoff, of the Russian army, who is an Armenian, and of the 170,000 Russian-Armenian soldiers who have been fighting so splendidly. He referred to the Armenian Volunteers fighting for France, to 6000 more Armenians ready at any time to help in the defence of Egypt, whilst in America there were 10,000 Armenian volunteers prepared to throw in their lot with the Allies. He further stated that it was wrong to think that Armenia had practically been wiped out by the massacres. He computed that, all told, Armenia could still show over two million men, including 14, million in the Caucasus and 120,000 in America.
