END OF VERDUN OFFENSIVE
HINTED AT IN GERMAN NEWS-
PAPERS,
FRENCH OFFENSIVE FORE-
STALLED,
AMSTERDAM, 16th April.
German newspapers hint at the abandonment of the attompts to capture Verdun, declaring that the German- move was intended merely to forestall a tremendous French offensive against Metz, planned for yesterday. The French calculation of German losses are said to be absurd. The German papers do not give the correct figures, but state that 90 per cent, of the Germans wounded at Verdun are able to return to the front.
