Dias, who is travelling via New Zealand to England to represent Australia and New Zealand at the Council meeting of the Amalgamated Carpenters and Joiners' Society at Manchester in June next, was last month presented at the Trades Hall, Melbourne, by members of his union with a handsome travelling bag. His chief mission is to seek local antonomy for the Society in Australasia, so that existing restrictions may be removed and jiive scope for greater expansion. 'Mr. Dias years ago was a member of the A.W.U., and' went to New Australia. In later days he did a, good deal of shearing in different parts of South America. NOTES. At its annual conference, the Queensland Railway Union decided to ask for a 44-hour week, preference to unionists, and general improvements in conditions.
