ACCIDENT AT PETONE RAILWAY STATION

SHUNTER KILLED,

A few minutes after 7 p.m. yesterday a shunter, named J. Chapman, aged 27 years, who resided at 5, Queen-street, Petone, was accidentally killed while engaged in his duties at the Petone Railway Station. Just how the accident occurred is not known. The first person to give the alarm was Mr. W. Lee, who saw a man being turned over by the axle of a wagon. He immediately called to the engine-driver, who at once stopped the engine, but too late to save deceased's life. Dr. Harding, who was called, pronounced life to be extinct, and the body was removed to the morgue in Wellington by the next train. Deceased had only been on duty for about a, fortnight. His mother resides in Wellington.
