RESULTS OF THE DERBY SCHEME

COMPLETE ANSWER TO GERMANY

PLENTY OF MEN OF HIGH QUALITY

■ (Received January 21, 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, 20th January. Lord Derby has informed the Associated Press Association that it is impossible to estimate the number of men his scheme will produce. One essential thing was sure, namely, that it had been a complete answer to Germany. It had shown we had enough men to carry the war to a successful conclusion. The quality of the recruits showed a high order of physique, stamina, and intelligence. There were three sizes of recruits, big, medium, and small. _It had become necessary to discontinue the small size entirely, and the medium partially. The intelligence of the men was of such high order that it (had helped to solve the problem of supplying 'sufficient trained officers. Asked for an opinion on the suggested settlement of soldiers after the war in Australia and New Zealand, Lord Derby replied : '.'lt is the best thing. They can come back when the oountvy needs them." The love for the Motherland, which the war had inspired was one of the redeeming features of the struggle." WE WILL HANG ON TILL THE GERMANS ARE THRASHED. •LONDON, 20th January.! The New York Herald's London correspondent has had an interview with Lord.Eei.hy. .-.'.We..will hanff..on..and.J3fiht J '.'jsaid.liie Lor.d«liiß,..l:.uut4^tta..Ger l

mans have been thoroughly thrashed. The Empire will find the men to do it. The call for volunteers has been more than gratifying. You see how they ate pouring in from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and all the Empire s outposts. Many thousands are paying their way for the proud privileges of fighting for the Motherland." A NEW CAMPAIGN. LONDON, 19th January. Lord Derby and his committee have decided on a great new recruiting campaign for married men as well as single, the result of the reopening of the groups being sufficiently satisfactory to warrant vigorous efforts to secure all the eligibles. It is expected that the first four groups, which will be called up for training to-morrow, will yield one hundred thousand men.
