MR. JUSTICE "HEYDON'-S MINIMUM. . SYDNEY,*'I7th December. Mr. Justice Heydon, reverting to the question he raised last month with regard to" wages and the decrease in the purchasing power of the sovereign, considers that the labourer's present wage, should be 52s 6d per week, and that other workers cannot claim the same proportion above the labourers as they did before. [Mr. Justice Heydon, recently issued a ■ statement regarding the alarming situation which has been created by the rapid decrease in the purchasing value of the sovereign, which is affecting the living wage. He stated that in a judgment given in February, 1914, he directed that wages should fluctuate "according to the purchasing value of the sovereign. ..It then stood at 23s 6d, and was now 28s Id, increasing the living wage from 48s to 635. He "had now decided that the resultant. increase in the cost of living cannot be met by increased wages, • and the obligations of the wages Boards under the clause therefore must be suspended. He has referred the matter to the Government.]
