DEATH SENTENCE ON JACKSO2T CONFIRMED. . (Received' December 18, 9.45 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day Jackson's appeal against his death sentence was quashed, and the death sentence confirmed [On the Ist October there was a sensational encounter between'the police and three burglars in the Trades Hall, Melbourne, resulting in Constable M'Grath being shot dead, and two of. the inI traders, John Jackson and Richard Buckley, being wounded. Jackson was wounded in the thigh, and sustained a broken ankle. He was secured ip the building. Buckley was seriously wounded in the neck, and collapsed after reaching the yard. Meantime, the third burglar, named Ward, was caught while attempting to escape •'by a window. M'Grath received two shots in the breaston entering the doorway of the corridor. [Sub-Inspector M'Kenna had a.narrow j escape. A burglar fired i. . shot which grazed him and entered tile thigh of ! the second burglar, Jackson, who was in j the line of fire. The burglars' objective, was the office of the Typographical Society The safe was found to have been wrenched from its stand, and portion of the steel back was sawn off. When interrupted the men were prising the safe open with a jemmy Jackson was found guilty and sentenced to death, but appealed. Buckley and Ward were ordered to stand a second trial.]
