ONSLOW BOROUGH

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Onslow Borough Council was held last evening Present: The Mayor (Mr. C. C. Crump) and Councillors J. C. Gardner, A: W C. Palmer, L. A. Browne, C. Bowden, W. Appleton, A. E. Budd, and'J. M. Dale.

Accounts amounting to £141 2s 9d were passed for payment. On the recommendation of the Finance Committee, the Rate Collector was authorised to assess Mr. J. Hill"s rates for eight acres of Crown land, belonging to the Labour Department, at Kaiwarra, rented for grazing purposes, on the freehold value of £895. It was pointed out. by the Mayor that the grazing value wa* only £200, but apparently Mr. Hill had contracted with the Government to pay the rates. If he was rated on the £200 only there was nobody from whom the remaining rates could be collected. Perhaps -a hardship would be placed upon Mr. Hill, but that could not bp helped. The council had to do the right thing. It was useless to attempt to collect rates from the Government.

A special committee, set. up to con sider the question of providing a sanitary service for Orislow, recommended : "That the council give the committee directions to wait on the Public Health _Committ eo of the City Council in reference to the pending agreement re drainage pipes, and also re theuse of the sentic tank for the disposal of sewage." The committee, it was reported, had not considered any definite scheme because, before this could be done; the city authorities would have to be approached in reference to the details of the proposed agreement. Until satisfaction was reached in that connection it was useless, to proceed. Mr. S. Hodgson, Izard-road, Khandallah, was givqn permission to erect the doors of his proposed motor shed 60 that they will open outwards. Ths Engineer (Mr. R. S. Bbunthwaite) reported that the work of footpath formation at 'Ngaio had been commenced. Several other matters of minor importance were receiving attention.
