PERSONAL MATTERS
In the House this morning, the Native Affairs Committee, through its CEairman (Mr J. A /Goring) reported that it had passed a resolution expressing high appreciation of the action of Messrs. W H. D. Bell, T. E. V Seddon, and Dr. Rangihiroa in responding to the Em- , pire's call. Mr. BeQ was in Flanders, Dr Rangihiroa was in Gallipoli, and Mr Seddon was training at Trentham. The report -was received -with applause. Dr Robert Henry Hogg has been appointed captain in the New Zealand Medical Corps. The Hon. R. K. Simpson, M.L.C., has been appointed a member of the Rangitikei Licensing Committee. Mr. C. Atkinson lias been appointed Officer in Charge of Police for the Island of Rarotonga. Mr. I. Hyams has resigned his position as secretary of the Wellington Bowling Club, on the score of indifferent health. Lieut. D. A. Kenny, a member of the Samoan Expeditionary Force, will shortly go into camp as a lieutenant in the 10th Reinforcements. ' Mr. W. E. Shaw, of the head office of the Lands and Survey Department, has ' been appointed cashier in the Lands and Survey Office, Nelson. Sergeant Jlelly, of the Manners-street police station, was advised yesterday of the death of his brother, Cpl. P. J. Kelly, of the Main Expeditionary Force. Mr. Stuart Seddon, who served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Samoa, will leave to-day for England, where he proposes to enlist in the Imperial Army. Mr T N. Brodrick, the new Undersecretary of .Lands, is gazetted a member of the Board of Land Purchase Commissioners, in place of Mr. James Mackenzie, 1.5.0, retired. Sergeant Gaffney, of the Wellington Police Force, has received word that his brother, Pte. Gaffney, who was captured by the Turks, has had to have one of his hands amputated. Major Felix Templemar> Bellringer, 11th Regiment (Taranaki Rifles), has been* promoted lieutenant-cplonel and given command of the regiment, vice Lieutenant-Colonel Malone, killed in action. Lieutenant C- C. Oliver (killed in action) was 24 years of age, and a son. of Mr. E. C; Oliver, cabinetmaker, Petone. Before he enlisted he was in business with his father. He joined the Queensland Artillery, and became a seibefore the Force left for the front. Major Norton Francis, New Zealand Motor Service Corps, who proceeded to Samoa as staff officer (temporarily), Samoa Expeditionary Force, or Ist June, 1915, having returned to the Dominion, has been temporarily attached to the General Staff at Headquarters, with his present rank.
