A STARVING HORSE

"GROSS CASE OF CRUELTY." "This is a shocking case of cruelty to a horse," said Mr. R. H. Webb, counsel representing the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, in the Magistrate's -Court to-day, when C. Bailey, expressman, was charged with cruelly illtreating a horse by failing to provide it with sufficient food and water. Captain Henry (Inspector for the S.P.C.A.) outlined the particulars. On 26th June, he visited a stable in Pen-rose-avenue, and saw a horse there belonging to defendant. The animal was in a very neglected and starved condition, and co weak that it was unable to stand. He made enquiries, and found that Bailey had not been near the stable to attend' to the horse for five days, nor had anybody made arrangements to water or feed it. Previously, he had seen the horse in an express driven, by Bailey. It was in such a low condition then that he ordered' it off the streets for three .weeks, and warned the driver to have it well fed. The horse was in such a bad condition on the 26th that he secur-. Ed an order, and destroyed it. Mr. A. H. Hindmarsh,' for defendant, did not attempt to excuse the latter, but stressed his poor financial position. "This is a case of gross cruelty and neglect," said Mr. D. G. A. Ceoper, S.M. "However, I will take into consideration the man's extreme poverty, and fine him £3." Bailey was also ordered to pay costs totalling £1 12s 6d.
