WEATHER AND CROPS
PROSPECT OF RAIN. _ Crop reports ., from the North Island continue to prove encouraging. A greater area has been sown this year than last season, and, if nothing untoward happens, a capital harvest be garnered. East Coast news, however, is little better than usual. The best that can be said is that hopes for rain are renewed, and there is a probability that this time showers will come. The meteorological report indicates that in the East Coast , districts the weather has continued fair and dry. Elsewhere gloomy conditions have prevailed, and more rain has fallen on the West Coast and about Cook and Foveaux Straits. Strong northerly and westerly winds have predominated, and atmospheric pressure has been unsteady. The prospects for rain on the East Coast are somewhat improved. It is probable that strong westerly winds will back to southerly and south-easterly, and rain may be expected to follow. Snow may also be expectsd on higher levels in the South, and oolder weather following. The barometer has a falling tendency, especially in the North, but is likely to rise rapidly in the South after from twenty-four to thirty-six hours.
