"KEEP THE WHEELS GOING"

Care for the returned soldier, first for the wounded, is recognised by the Mayor as a prime and urgent necessity ; but the wheels of industry must be kept running. A few days ago there met in •the Mayor's room Messrs. Rowley (Secretary for Labour), M. L". A. Rearden (Trades and Labour Council representative), James Macintosh (chairman Chamber of Commerce), William Pryor (secretary Employers' Federation), and W. Jack (secretary Farmers' Union). They discussed the great question of placing the men. Matters were discussed relating to the war generally in connection with the War League's activities, which include the furtherance of recruiting. The influence of recruiting upon the industrial, commercial, and farming interests of the country were considered. It was resolved to do all that was possible to assist in keeping trade and_ industries going, especially in assisting in harvesting. The Mayor and Mr. Macintosh were entrusted with the watching of com-^ mercial interests, and Mr. Rearden stated that the Trades Council would meet next Thursday, when the matters raised I at that meeting would be considered.
