TO PROMOTE BRITISH TRADE

m ' v PUBLIC MEETING ON MONDAY. The attention of citizens is directed to a public meeting which will be held in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall on Monday ■ evening next at • 8 o'clock. The object of the meeting is to promote interest in British trade, and resolutions will be submitted urging citizens to insist, on the completion of the war, that when purchases are effected they are supplied with, goods made either in New Zealand, in Great Britain, or in British dependencies, or, failing British Empire goods being obtainable, goods from Britain's Allies, to the exclusion of goods manufactured in Germany end Austria and -in other, present enemy countries. At this time the public are urged to make a point of attending this public meeting to show in a practical way their sympathy with the movement. In the past people in New Zealand have been lax, in that they have purchased goods irrespective of whether they were of British or German manufacture. The imports from Germany alone during the past several years have approximated £750,000 per annum, and New Zealand has to this extent helped to provide the sinews of war for Germany. - The principal speakers at the meeting will be Sir Joseph Ward, the Hon. A. L Herdman, the Mayor, and other public men.

Waugh promised a number of pot plants to be sold at the flower sale stall. The services of the Hutt orchestra were secured free of charge, and very liberal responses had been given generally to the committee's appeals. The prospects were considered very favourable for a good show, and it is hoped to be able to hand over a substantial sum to the Wounded Soldiers Fund. The Right Rev. the Bishop of Wellington will administer the rite of Confirma.tion in St. Thomas' 6 Church, Wellington South (Newtown), to-morrow evening, the service commencing at 7 o'clock.
