MAKARA COUNTY COUN CIL

At tbe monthly meeting of the Makara County Conned! yesterday, considerable attention was devoted to the Hntt-road Bill, under which the County Council has to pay £7200 towards the cost of the construction- It was decided to send a letter of protest to the members for the district, Messrs. B. A. Wright and W H. Field. The letter points out that the County Council was not in existence when the road was made, and thai a very snail portion of it is situated in the boundary in actual use by £6© ratepayers of the county. The council also asked if the increased rate of interest provided by the Bill would have to be paid during the currency of the debentures, and if any could be made for reducing the rate as soon as the financial position resumes the normal, and that provision should be made for reapportionment if a portion of the county should become merged in any other county. The letter farther pointed out that the Makara, County is already faced with a proposition, of considerabie magTutnde in the maintenance of the Ngahauranga Gorge-road, and in this connection it was decided to send a deputation to urge on the Wellington City Council that it should contribute towards the cost of maintenance.
